Argo fans celebrate Grey Cup heroes
The Toronto Argos proved to be gracious champions Tuesday.
On the one hand, they rolled into Nathan Phillips Square at city hall, hoisting their freshly won Grey Cup, and enjoyed all the spoils of victory that go with it.
That included the adulation from some 4,000 fans, who joined their CFL championship heroes and basked in the win and the lovely weather that provided a perfect, sunny day for the celebration.
But the Argos — from GM Jim Popp and coach Marc Trestman to the players and all the supporting staff — humbly thanked their supporters, encouraging them to buy tickets for next season.
“If you’re not a believer, start believing,” Popp told the crowd.
“If you haven’t joined us, join. I’ll tell you, you’re joining the Love Boat.”
That Love Boat theme became a popular one several weeks ago, as the Argos revamped their belief in themselves and began defying the odds stacked against them, culminating in the Grey Cup champship.
Along the way, Trestman quoted both Martin Luther King and Muhammad Ali in a bid to inspire his team at a time when it was below .500 in the standings.
